“Papua New Guinea,” located in the east of Indonesia, has the perfect conditions for growing coffee trees, such as volcanic soil, tropical rainforest weather and highland climate. Coffee beans are the second largest exporting crop in the country. 80% of the coffee is grown by local independent farmers. “Sigri Estate,” established in 1950, is at an altitude of 1500m in Wahgi Valley.
Coffee cherries here are hand picked and undergo wet processing. The processing of the beans is done three times, instead of the more typical once, with the water being changed between each process that creates an unique profile of flavours. Its flavours, unlike the coffee grown in nearby Indonesia, are clean and bright. People usually compare its quality and taste with coffees from Latin America. Besides, Sigri Estate’s plantation is very eco-friendly. It adopts the ‘medium density shade strategy’ by using two types of shade trees to evenly ripen the coffee cherries and protect the variety of bird species. Now, it provides a habitat for more than 90 species of birds.
In addition, Papua New Guinea is close to Australia and its coffee bean’s taste is similar to Latin America’s clean, acidic and sweet taste. Therefore, it is very popular in Australia.
